January Nutrition Athletes of the Month


2014 promises to be an exciting year for Bruin Athletes!  With the #110 NCAA Championship this past month by the Women's Soccer team, expect more championships and winning seasons! The athletes this month are amazing examples of successful, determined, and hard-working Bruins.

Kathryn Murphy- Swimming

 
Kathyrn Murphy has started off the season strong with breaking the 200 medley relay at the Texas Invite. She also hold lifetimes bests in:
50 Freestyle (Short Course) 22.45 - 1st All-Time at UCLA
100 Freestyle (Short Course) 48.68 - 1st All-Time at UCLA
200 Freestyle (Short Course) 1:47.82
50 Freestyle (Long Course) 26.39
100 Freestyle (Long Course) 56.56
200 Freestyle (Long Course) 2:04.56

What is the impact of nutrition on your performance? 
Since making changes to her diet, she gained more muscle and reports increased speed and endurance in the pool.

What is your favorite recovery food/drink? 
       Chocolate Milk and Almonds

What is the biggest difference that you have seen in your performance when you have made changes to your diet?
      Kathryn reports feeling better in and out of the water. She also is able to recover quicker in between workouts.  Overall, by focusing on her nutrition and meeting with Emily she has more energy to make it through the long week of training and meets!

     Jordan Adams- Men's Basketball

      
   During the NCAA tournament last year, Jordan suffered a broken foot. He worked hard in the off-season on improving his diet, increasing his calcium-rich food sources, and meeting weekly with Emily for support and accountability.
He has led UCLA in scoring, either by himself or tied with teammates, in 10 of 13 games. He has scored in double figures in 12 of UCLA’s 13 games and has reached the 20-point plateau seven times.

     What is the impact of nutrition on your performance?  
      By making changes to his diet, he helped his foot heal faster and get back on the court.

     What is your favorite recovery food/drink? 
       Peanut butter and banana

     What is the biggest difference that you have seen in your performance when you have made changes to your diet?
      Jordan has cut down on this fast food and is now eating healthier foods.  These changes helped to heal his broken foot and recover after practice and games.
